Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Ashura means "tenth" in Arabic language. On the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar is called "Ashura". Ashura is a day of great historical significance. Allah saved Prophet Moses and his followers from the tyranny of Pharaoh on this day. Imam Hussain the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad was martyred at the hands of an army acting under the orders of a despotic ruler named Yazid. Hazrat Isa (A.S) was raised to Jannah. Hazrat Ayyub (A.S) was restored to health. Allah Taala spoke directly to Hazrat Musa (A.S) and gave him the Commandments.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) entered Medina in the first year of Hijra and noticed the Jews fasting. He asked one of his companions: "Why are the Jews fasting?". His companion replied: "The Jews are remembering when Prophet Moses (pbuh) and the children of Israel were saved from the Pharaoh". The prophet said: "I have a greater right on Moses than what they do. Therefore, my people will fast on Ashura in the same way they are fasting on Ashura". One of the companions exclaimed: "O Messenger of Allah, but we are going to be copying the Jews" and the prophet then replied: "You are right, from now on we will fast on the 9th and 10th".
'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on 'Ashura' and commanded the Muslims to fast as well, they said, 'O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'If I live to see the next year, in sha Allah, we will fast on the ninth day too.' But it so happened that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away before the next year came." [Reported by Muslim, ]
Ash-Shafi'i and his companions, Ahmad, Ishaq and others said: "It is mustahabb to fast on both the ninth and tenth days, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on the tenth, and intended to fast on the ninth.
